Kindness Matters (College) Scholarship

Brisa Bauer is our 2024 Kindness Matters Scholarship recipient. She will be attending Oregon State University.

“Brisa is one of the neatest young people around. Her’s is an open and welcoming nature who takes shy runners and students, and through her nurturing way supports them to become their best selves. Be it by words or gestures or even just a look and smile, she is quick to approach anyone who is on the periphery and invite them in. While not our top runner, she has long been one of our team leaders in cross country and track due to her strength of character. As such, she took some very shy freshmen and helped them find their place. She also tries to convey confidence, which is infectious to her teammates, and when we placed third at District (did not qualify for state) hers was the reassuring voice who put it in perspective so the girls were able to walk away with their heads held high in spite of race-results unhappiness.
She often puts others ahead of herself: this looking-out-for-the-other-person which is so intrinsic for her is also while learning to deal with her own anxiety (competitively- and academically-sourced, like so many other youth) and fears (she was displaced for a year when the fires ravaged our community and most homes on her block were destroyed). She volunteered for many hours to restore the creek watershed in the wake of this.”
